Rail & the environment

Rail has environmental advantages over many other modes of transport, which is a key reason why governments promote rail. However, rail must continuously improve its environmental performance to retain this advantage, particularly given the improvements in motor vehicle technology in recent years. This site provides an overview of the work the global railway sector is doing on the environment, and the UIC’s own work on environment, energy efficiency and sustainable development.
