New Strategy brochure - Moving towards Sustainable Mobility

Monday 4 June 2012, by Maguelonne de Cossart

Moving towards Sustainable Mobility: European
Rail Sector Strategy 2030 and beyond’ was jointly
agreed and endorsed by members of UIC and CER
in December 2010 to provide a unified approach
to environmental and sustainability topics in the
European rail sector. It outlines how the rail sector
should be performing in environmental terms
in 2030 and 2050, and provides a framework
that allows companies in the rail sector to make
suitable long-term plans.

UIC-IEA Railway Handbook: Energy Consumption and CO2 emissions of World Railway sector

UIC and the International Energy Agency (IEA), the world’s most authoritative body’s for energy statistics since the ‘70s, work hand in hand to provide high quality Energy and CO2 data describing the environmental performance of the Railway Sector. The handbook is the result of the harmonization of the UIC Energy/CO2 railway database with the IEA World Energy Balances and CO2 Emissions from Fuel Combustion database, together with some projections and modelling. It represents a unique source of direct data of the railway sector verified and consistency checked by the IEA. The aim of the Handbook is to provide institutions, associations and decision-makers with robust key performance indicators as the foundation on which to build the greening of our future transport choices. The new 2013 Railway Handbook has a new “World” section containing global trends on energy consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as a whole section focusing on the energy mix used by railways in Europe. It includes more than 130 graphs.
