UN Global Compact

A standard for Sustainability from the United Nations

Friday 7 September 2012

Our partnership with the UN takes many forms, such as attending the COP or the Conference of Sustainable Development, but we also collaborate with some of their special programs or initiatives, such as the UN Global Compact.

What is UN Global Compact?

“The Global Compact asks companies to embrace universal principles and to partner with the United Nations. It has grown to become a critical platform for the UN to engage effectively with enlightened global business.” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon explains.
More precisely, the UN Global Compact asks companies to embrace, support and enact, within their sphere of influence, a set of core values in the areas of human rights, labour standards, the environment and anti-corruption, following some principles.

Their Principles

UIC became a member, as did DB, SNCF and Korean Rail in 2010, meaning that we now support the 10 principles which are listed below :

Human Rights

  • Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
  • Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

  • Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
  • Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
  • Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour; and
  • Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

  • Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
  • Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
  • Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

  • Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

The outcomes

Supporting the ten principles of the UN Global Compact provides most inspiring, strongest and sound credibility to our efforts, as summarized in the UIC Declaration Sustainable Mobility & Transportation.
It is another step that reinforced our cooperation with the UN, allowing us to more and more widespread the message that railways are more than able to cope with new challenges.
